More Than Enough: The Power of Small Contributions

By Richard Huxley | Maximum Career Coaching

Have you ever felt like what you bring to the table isn’t enough?

It could be a small idea in a meeting, a quiet act of kindness, or a role behind the scenes that doesn’t get much recognition. It’s easy to look at the world and think, “What difference can I make?” or “What difference am I REALLY making here at my workplace?”

But history—and faith—tell a different story.

The Boy With the Lunch

In one of the most well-known moments of Jesus’ ministry, a crowd of over 5,000 people gathered to hear Him teach. As the day wore on, the people grew hungry, and the disciples grew concerned. There simply wasn’t enough food.

That’s when a boy came forward.

He didn’t bring a banquet or a bounty—just five loaves and two small fish. It wasn’t much. In fact, the disciples scoffed: “What are they among so many?” (John 6:9)

But Jesus didn’t see lack. He saw potential.

He took what the boy offered, gave thanks, and began to distribute it. Miraculously, it multiplied. Not only was the entire crowd fed, but there were twelve baskets of leftovers.

I love thinking about that boy and the start of his day. When he woke up, he had no idea what ripple effect he would make by simply speaking up and offering what little he had. That boy’s small contribution—his ordinary lunch—became the catalyst for an extraordinary miracle.

You May Feel Small—But You’re Not

Now, imagine for a moment. What if that boy sat there and said to himself, “I would love to help, but what I have to offer is so little and will not make a difference.

You may feel that your work, presence, or ideas are insignificant. But when offered with a willing heart, your contribution can ripple far beyond what you can see.

  • That encouragement you gave someone on a hard day? It may have given them the strength to keep going.
  • That small solution you offered at work? It could be the seed of a breakthrough.
  • That time you mentored a younger colleague? It may shape their entire career path.

The truth is: You don’t have to be the loudest in the room or the one with all the answers. You just have to be faithful with what’s in your hands.

Like the boy with the loaves and fish, what you carry matters—especially when you’re willing to offer it. And think of the thousands you can impact!
