The Warning Signs of Poor Leadership

By Richard Huxley, M.Ed, LSSBB, CEC

Leadership leaves fingerprints on every part of an organization: from morale to retention, innovation to revenue. When leadership falters, the symptoms are easy to see, but often ignored: low morale, high turnover, unclear goals, and a culture where fear replaces trust. Poor leaders communicate inconsistently, avoid accountability, and fail to cast a clear vision that inspires others to move forward. The result? Teams drift, creativity fades, and engagement collapses under the weight of uncertainty.

Outstanding leadership, on the other hand, lifts people higher. It communicates clearly, builds trust through accountability, and cultivates a culture of empathy and growth. When people feel seen, heard, and valued, they don’t just follow — they contribute. Leadership is the mirror of organizational health; when it’s strong, everything else thrives. When it’s weak, the cracks show in every department and relationship.

Reflection:
Take a moment to look at your team, or even yourself. Are morale, trust, and performance trending upward or downward? The answers will tell you everything about the quality of leadership. Remember, leadership isn’t about control…it’s about creating an environment where others can rise.
